I will name you Eli
because you would have split blades of grass with your fingernails.
They grew inside me to separate these things,
Eli, Eli, Eli
you would have been
a voice before you could be a boy playing a game,
hiding behind trees and bushes, arm poised to snap a branch
and
transform it into a bow.

But you sang a song that drove my blood into a memory.

It is called part two.
We will call part one what I can’t remember.

What is it about this finding that makes naming you a discovery?
You were hard matter in a shell that I imagined sat beside me
and stayed in my house when I left.
What does that mean for a disappearing act?

I will do this with care and time
the way I have done things patiently before
so they divide slowly and equally,
the way they are supposed to grow.
And when a tune of pages flipping and hair twirling around a finger
plays, my teeth ache with you to say your name.

Eli, Eli,
a misnomer for this genre of grief
when I want to be quiet
and I know

on top of a skyscraper
when I look up and feel condensed,
inside a jar when I begin to make dinner –
you are terms for something I have never studied.

I want to apologize and simplify this gesture:

the release of my muscles in the morning,
